Call for volunteers and donations! Typhoon Relief 2019

The Peace Boat Disaster Relief (PBV) has been carrying out relief projects in Chiba Prefecture and Fukushima Prefecture, both of which are affected by Typhoons Faxai (No. 15) and Hagibis (No.19). The typhoons occurring in September and October, caused severe damage to buildings, public facilities, infrastructure and livelihood. PBV teams are working closely with local authorities, NGOs, disaster relief networks, and organizations in the affected regions to provide much needed support to local residents. In southern Chiba, thousands of houses sustained roof damage in the powerful winds of the typhoons. Call for Volunteers! Typhoon 19 Emergency Relief in Iwaki, Fukushima Prefecture: 15-17 Nov., 2019

Typhoon 19 struck the Japanese archipelago with great force on October 12th and 13th, 2019. It brought record-breaking heavy rains to numerous areas and caused emergency warnings in 12 different prefectures. Levees broke in 145 places, and the flood damaged over 60,000 households. Peace Boat Disaster Relief Center (PBV) provides support predominantly in Iwaki, Fukushima prefecture (affected by Typhoon 19) and Kyonan, Chiba prefecture (first hit by Typhoon 15, then struck again by Typhoon 19). We are pleased to announce that we are renaming our organization from “Peace Boat Disaster Relief Volunteer Center” to “Peace Boat Disaster Relief,” starting on October 1st, 2019. New name (EN): Peace Boat Disaster Relief New name (JP): ピースボート災害支援センター Abbreviation: PBV Although our official name is changed, kindly continue calling us PBV, the name you are already familiar with. Two Years Since the Kumamoto Earthquake, The State of Kumamoto

We visited Kumamoto two years after the Kumamoto earthquake.                       In April 2016, Peace Boat Disaster Relief Volunteer Center (PBV) dispatched staff to the disaster site from April 16 immediately after the main shock occurred. and started disaster relief work. Until the end of December we carried out eight projects in Kumamoto city, Mashiki, Nishihara village and Minamiaso village, among others. Two years after the Kumamoto earthquake, staff interview

Two years have passed since the Kumamoto earthquake of April 2016. The Peace Boat Disaster Relief Volunteer Center (PBV) was established seven years ago, following the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami. The Kumamoto earthquake was PBV’s second time large-scale disaster response following an earthquake. PBV stayed on site and provided direct support for about 8 months. Many young people chose to work with non-profit organisations following their experience working with PBV in the area affected by the Kumamoto earthquake. Fukushima Youth Ambassadors Project: Summer 2017

At 6.30am on July 27, a group of children from Minami-Soma in Fukushima Prefecture gathered in a local hall. Eleven middle and high school students from Minami-Soma participated in the Fukushima Youth Ambassadors Project Summer 2017, a joint project started in 2011 by international NGO Peace Boat and PBV. The project aims to provide children affected by the Fukushima nuclear disaster with care and an international study experience, as many of the children of Fukushima have not been able to play outside due to dangerous levels of radiation. *For more information about PBV’s activities in Fukushima, please refer to this link. Northern Kyushu Flooding and Landslides: Emergency Response

Record-setting rainfall since July 5, 2017, has hit the northern part of Kyushu, centered on Fukuoka and Oita prefectures. This unprecedented amount of rain has caused massive flooding over wide areas, and landslides.   Heavy rain continues to fall intermittently in affected areas, roads have been flooded, and homes severely damaged. Hardest hit include the mountainous areas of Fukuoka and Oita prefectures, and the Disaster Relief Act will apply to these areas as enormous damage has been reported. Disaster Preparedness Training For Dutch Embassy Tokyo Staff

On 2nd December 2016, PBV was invited to the Embassy of the Royal Kingdom of the Netherlands in Tokyo to train Embassy staff in disaster preparedness. PBV conducted two workshops, attended by a total of 45 embassy staff. The participants explored the following key workshop themes: – Understanding your household and surroundings – Visualizing a disaster – Disaster preparedness and response PBV’s trainer covered practical skills in how to prepare one’s home, protect one’s self and loved ones, and minimise disaster impacts.
