Peace Boat x UNISDR Joint Programme – Resilient Youth in Asia

Emergency Response: Floods in Japan Update

PBV has launched emergency relief operations in response to the flooding which has affected parts of Japan in the past week. Described as a “once-in-50-years” event, exceptionally heavy rains caused by Typhoon Etau have severely impacted communities across Ibaraki, Miyagi and Tochigi Prefectures. Flooding and landslides which occurred on 10th September claimed lives and damaged thousands of homes. PBV has launched emergency relief operations in response to the flooding that has affected Ibaraki, Miyagi and Tochigi Prefectures in Japan. Described as a “once-in-50-years” event, exceptionally heavy rains caused by Typhoon Etau have left a wake of destruction across the three Prefectures. Flooding and landslides which occurred on 10th September have claimed lives and damaged or destroyed thousands of homes. On 11th September, PBV dispatched an advanced team to the affected areas to conduct a rapid needs assessment and coordinate with other organisations on the ground. Guatemala: Peace Boat hosts the 1st Assembly of The Community Practitioners’ Platform for Resilience

On 30th June, Peace Boat hosted the “1st Assembly of The Community Practitioners’ Platform for Resilience” in Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala. In partnership with Fundación Guatemala and Huairou Commision, Peace Boat welcomed over 30 representatives from Guatemala and El Salvador, all working in Disaster Risk Reduction and resilience building, onto Peace Boat’s passenger ship, the Ocean Dream. These communities are plagued by similar disasters, but rarely do the community members themselves have the time and opportunity to gather and interact in this way. Nepal Earthquake 2015: Emergency Relief

PBV’s team landed in Kathmandhu on 3rd May 2015 in order to conduct a rapid needs assessment and provide immediate relief to communities affected by the 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Nepal. At the time of writing, the disaster has claimed over 8500 lives, destroyed hundreds of thousands of homes, and has crippled critical infrastructure across the country. An estimated one million children are unable to attend classes due to damage to schools, and many hospitals have sustained severe damage. Nepal Earthquake 2015: Emergency Relief

On 25th April, a magnitude-7.8 earthquake struck 80km northwest of Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. The strong tremor has caused severe loss of life and widespread damage across the country; thousands of casualties have been reported and critical infrastructure has sustained significant damage. The toll is expected to rise as more information from affected areas becomes available. Vanuatu: Cyclone Pam Relief

PBV is currently conducting a needs assessment in Vanuatu after Tropical Cyclone Pam, working closely with local governments, national government agencies, INGOs and NGOs, and civil society on the ground. PBV is actively taking part in the UN cluster meetings, to ensure that our activities are part of the larger international community’s movements to provide assistance and to ensure that all information is shared as much as possible to reduce duplication of efforts. Africa Resilient Youth and the “Ocean Dream Declaration”
