“The Hot Meals Helped Us Feed Our Families”: Voices from North Sumatra

After the floods in North Sumatra, daily life became uncertain for thousands of families who suddenly lost access to basic necessities. Cooking, eating, and maintaining hygiene turned into daily challenges, especially for those living in damaged homes or temporary shelters. Through the emergency response carried out by PBV and ASAR Humanity, many families were able to regain a sense of stability, even in the midst of recovery. Emergency Relief Reaches Flood-Affected Communities in North Sumatra

From January 27 to February 23, 2026, Peace Boat Disaster Relief (PBV), in partnership with ASAR Humanity, provided emergency assistance to communities affected by floods in Sipirok and Batangtoru, North Sumatra, Indonesia. The response reached a total of 5,115 families, or approximately 25,725 people, many of whom were facing displacement, damaged homes, and limited access to food and basic necessities. In Sipirok, a public kitchen was operated from January 27 to February 9. Over ten days of activity, volunteers prepared approximately 1,000 hot meals per day, ensuring that around 1,400 individuals had access to freshly cooked food while their homes remained unusable. Monitoring Visit to Our Relief Efforts in North Sumatra, Indonesia

From February 8 to 12, PBV staff visited Indonesia to observe our ongoing relief operations, distribute hot meals and relief supplies, and monitor the progress of our assistance efforts. Our relief activities in Indonesia are carried out in close coordination with our local partner, ASAR Humanity, a trusted NGO with a strong track record of collaboration. We have worked together in response to past disasters in Indonesia. Emergency Relief in Sumatra: Updates and Expansion

Since November 2025, a wave of record-breaking floods has devastated Southeast Asia. Indonesia’s Sumatra island has been among the hardest hit by catastrophic floods and landslides. As of January 23, 2026, the disaster in Sumatra has claimed approximately 1,200 lives, with 143 people still missing. Heavy Rain Disaster in Northern Japan Emergency Relief Fund

Record-breaking heavy rainfall since July 25, 2024 has caused landslides, floor flooding, and other damage in Yamagata and Akita prefectures in Japan. More than five levees along rivers flowing through Yamagata and Akita prefectures were breached, and approximately 1,000 houses were reportedly flooded in both prefectures. The number of damaged houses is likely to increase as the situation becomes clearer. The Peace Boat Disaster Relief(PBV) dispatched two staff members to the area on July 28 to investigate the damage situation and assistance needed, and will conduct relief activities according to local needs. Certificate of appreciation from Saga Prefecture

We are very honored to be awarded a certificate of appreciation from the Governor of Saga Prefecture. Yasuhiro Ueshima, the secretary-general of the Peace Boat Disaster Relief (PBV) attended the ceremony held on February 4th, 2022, on behalf of the PBV team. Since August last year, PBV has carried out relief programs in Omachi-cho, Saga Prefecture to support the communities affected by the floods. Visiting the Honjo Life Safety Learning Center

Have you ever experienced an earthquake, flood, or fire? According to JMA (the Meteorological Agency of Japan), approximately 2000 earthquakes occur in Japan every year, though many of them are benign shakes. This week, earthquakes have been occurring more frequently with more intensity. While natural disasters are here to stay, we can prepare for them together. Emergency Relief Fund for the August 2021 Heavy Rain and Flood Launched

A large part of western Japan, including the Kyushu regions, has been experiencing torrential rains and rain-triggered flooding and mudslides since 11th August. According to reports as of 19th August, the rains caused damage in 20 prefectures, with eleven persons lost or missing and nearly 5000 houses damaged or inundated. More rains are in the forecast, and it is likely that more damages will be reported in the coming days. Heavy rains hit Western Japan Torrential rain has triggered floods and landslides in many parts of Japan since 11 August, 2021. Record-breaking rainfall has been causing severe damages to communities in the northern Kyushu and Chugoku regions.
