With each day that has passed: Nine years since the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami

March 11, 2020. Nine years since the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami. We express our deepest condolences to those whose lives were lost, and to the bereaved families. The whereabouts of 2,529 people remains unknown even today, and there are 47,737 people still living in evacuation. Each and every person has a life which cannot be expressed in numbers, and each of the 3,288 days which has passed cannot be expressed just by the 9th anniversary. Since the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami, Peace Boat Disaster Relief (PBV) has worked together with many volunteers, in several disaster affected areas. An elderly man standing at a loss in front […]

New Year’s Greetings 2020

Thank you for your continued support to the PBV! The year 2019 was, again, a year with devastating disasters around the globe. In mid-March, the powerful cyclone, Idai, struck southern African countries and caused severe damage in Mozambique. In summer, unprecedented heavy rains flooded Northern Kyushu in Japan, followed by typhoons No. 15 and No. 19 in Eastern Japan. While we engage in relief activities in the damaged areas, we are concerned about the scale and frequency of the storm-related disasters we have witnessed in recent years. The damage caused by disasters have been scaled up recently, and we feel the necessity to diversify our expertise and activities based on […]

Typhoon Hagibis Situation Update: Relief activities in Iwaki

It has been two months since the occurrence of a large-scale destruction caused by Typhoon Hagibis (No. 19). Peace Boat Disaster Relief (PBV) has been carrying out relief projects in Iwaki, Fukushima Prefecture for nearly 60 days. As time passes, more accurate details of the damage have been unveiled. According to a recent assessment, the number of houses damaged by the storm reaches over 9000 in Iwaki city alone. The media coverage on the disaster is surprisingly low, considering that it is one of the worst disasters in Japan since the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami. While so little is mentioned in national news, local people’s struggle for recovery […]
