Support for Communities Affected by 2019 Typhoons Continues in Chiba

The longer it takes after the disaster, the more complex and challenging cases are found in terms of support. Communities in the southern part of Chiba Prefecture, Japan were hit hard by typhoons Faxai and Hagibis in 2019. The PBV team has been working closely with the local support groups and public sectors to continue the relief efforts. The house we visited today with the local Social Welfare Council members was assessed as half destroyed. Despite the emergency repair system being applied and a sum of JPY 595,000 being granted, the amount was not sufficient enough to cover all of the repair costs. Emergency Relief Fund for the August 2021 Heavy Rain and Flood Launched

A large part of western Japan, including the Kyushu regions, has been experiencing torrential rains and rain-triggered flooding and mudslides since 11th August. According to reports as of 19th August, the rains caused damage in 20 prefectures, with eleven persons lost or missing and nearly 5000 houses damaged or inundated. More rains are in the forecast, and it is likely that more damages will be reported in the coming days. Recovering from flooding: Support materials from Japanese civil society

Heavy rains hit Western Japan Torrential rain has triggered floods and landslides in many parts of Japan since 11 August, 2021. Record-breaking rainfall has been causing severe damages to communities in the northern Kyushu and Chugoku regions. According to the meteorological agency, more rains are forecasted to continue in prefectures in western and northern Japan. Heavy rains, floods and landslides across Japan

Growing concerns about frequent torrential rains and floods in Japan Last weekend on July 3rd, we were shocked by the news of deadly landslides caused by torrential rain in the city of Atami, in the Shizuoka Prefecture. The massive landslide washed away more than 130 houses and took the lives of nine people. More than 20 people are reported to be missing, and the search effort by rescue teams and the Self Defense Force continues as of July 8th. Typhoon Hagibis: Helping Iwaki community get back on its feet

Disaster relief efforts in Iwaki, Fukushima have been ongoing after the damage caused by the 2019 Typhoon Hagibis. From January of 2020, Peace Boat Disaster Relief (PBV) has been working towards reviving the disaster-affected community by providing supplies to local community centers. We hope that the supplies can be useful and help the community get back on its feet. However, due the COVID-19 pandemic, activities for community spaces that we planned on passing on to local organizations were halted as people were unable to assemble at community centers. Typhoons Faxai and Hagibis: Local volunteers take the lead for full recovery of Chiba communities

When was the last time you spent the night under canvas? After Typhoons Faxai and Hagibis in September and October 2019, residents remain in need of help. Many still spend nights under damaged roofs in southern Chiba, waiting for repairs by professional carpenters.   Successful workshops Peace Boat Disaster Relief (PBV) co-hosted training workshops for local volunteers along with our partners at the Southern Chiba Disaster Relief Center. Call for Donations: Emergency Relief for Torrential Rains and Flooding in Kyushu 2020

Since July 3, 2020, record torrential rains have continued mainly in Kumamoto and other prefectures in Kyushu. Heavy rain emergency warnings have been issued in several prefectures in southern and western parts of the Japanese archipelago. The rains have been causing large-scale flood damage and landslides in many parts of the affected regions. CALL FOR DONATIONS: Heavy rains in Northern Kyushu 2019

The northern part of Kyushu has been experiencing severe heavy rain since August 28, 2019, with particular damage in Fukuoka, Saga, Oita Prefectures. The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a warning, and evacuation orders were made for approximately 880,000 people in these three prefectures. There have been rivers overflowing in various locations, and as of August 29 the Cabinet Office has announced that there was inundation above floor level in 82 buildings, and below in 318. The overall extent of the damage is as yet unknown, and it is anticipated that it may expand further.
