From the field: Ishikawa Noto Peninsula Earthquake Emergency Relief

Today, we carried out activities in two teams. One group delivered generators, gasoline, body warmers, water and food to areas where roads were connected last night. The heads of each local municipality will now distribute them to each household. This is the first time these areas have received relief supplies, and they gave thanks, almost in tears. Such actions are made possible by information shared at the private sector coordination meetings regarding villages and communities still in isolation. Initial Response Report: 2024 Ishikawa Noto Peninsula Earthquake Emergency Relief Underway

At around 4:10pm on January 1, 2024, an earthquake struck the Noto Peninsula area of Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan. We express our deepest sympathy to all affected by the earthquake. The damage is enormous, and the full scale of the disaster and extent of the damage remains is as yet still unknown. Strong aftershocks are still occurring frequently, and local residents are still in a very challenging situation. We are making all efforts to support those affected, ensuring their personal safety and assisting them in getting through these difficult, cold days. Ishikawa Earthquake: PBV helps hot-meal distribution in Nanao City

Shortly after the earthquake in Ishikawa Prefecture on 1 January 2024, Peace Boat Disaster Relief (PBV) dispatched the staff to the affected areas. In Ishikawa Prefecture alone, more than 34,000 residents are in evacuation centers as of the morning of 3 January. The affected region has a particularly high rate of elderly populations, thus the maintenance of health conditions after the evacuation is a crucial issue. Infrastructure in many parts of the disaster zones has been damaged, and the residents have less access to hot meals to keep them warm in freezing cold weather. Ishikawa Noto Peninsula Earthquake Emergency Relief Fund

On 1 January 2024, an earthquake of magnitude 7.6 was observed in Noto, Ishikawa Prefecture. Immediately after the earthquake, Peace Boat Disaster Relief (PBV) started gathering information in cooperation with local organizations, government agencies, and support groups. On 2 January, PBV dispatched the staff to the Noto Peninsula, where the devastating damage had been reported, and is currently conducting damage and needs assessment in the region. Nearly 60,000 people are in evacuation centers in the affected prefectures (as of 2 January). Thousands of houses lost their supply of running water and electricity. Emergency Relief with World Central Kitchen in Lahaina, Maui Island

The PBV team in Maui joined World Central Kitchen and supported them in distributing meals to the residents affected by the fires in Lahaina. Last week, PBV staff dispatched to Maui joined the non-profit organization World Central Kitchen to help distribute meals to the residents affected by the fires in Lahaina. PBV has set up an emergency relief fund to support local communities in Maui and to date, funds from individual donors have supported over 700 meals, which have been distributed this past week. Call for Donations: Emergency Relief for Communities Affected by Wildfires in Maui County, Hawai’i.

On 8th August, 2023, the first fire was confirmed in Maui Island, Hawaii. The fires spread quickly and burnt the communities for days, resulting in damaging more than 2000 buildings in western area of the island. According to the media reports, most of the burnt structures were residential. Peace Boat Disaster Relief (PBV) launched an emergency relief fund to support the affected communities. The fund will be utilized to support the local partner organizations delivering emergency assistance to the communities, The PBV is also dispatching three members to the location on 20 August, to deliver emergency support and plan for longer relief projects. Emergency Relief Fund for the Noto Peninsula Earthquake May 2023

On May 5, 2023, at around 14:42, there was an earthquake in Ishikawa Prefecture with a strong tremor of intensity 6 upper on the Japanese seismic scale. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the epicenter was located in the Noto region of Ishikawa Prefecture, with an estimated depth of 10 km and a magnitude of 6.3. Peace Boat Disaster Relief (PBV) expresses our deepest sympathies to all those affected by this earthquake. Turkiye-Syria Earthquakes: PBV delivered emergency supplies in Hatay, Turkiye

Responding to the earthquakes that occurred on 6th February in southwestern Turkiye, Peace Boat Disaster Relief (PBV) dispatched staff members to the affected areas for damage assessment and emergency relief activity in late February. During the visit, the team delivered emergency relief supplies to the affected communities in Hatay province, one of the worst affected areas. With the support of Turkiye-based members of ASAR Humanity, we distributed more than 400 hot meals, 50 hygiene kits, 30 solar lanterns, and 13 sleeping bags. Update on West Java Earthquake Relief: Activities in Partnership with ASAR Humanity

March 21, 2023 marks four months since the Western Java earthquake in Indonesia. The disaster took the lives of 602 people and damaged 56,548 houses resulting in the displacement of more than 114,000 residents. Immediately after the earthquake, Peace Boat Disaster Relief (PBV) launched an emergency relief fund and has supported our local partner, ASAR Humanity since. We are very grateful that more than 900 individuals and organizations in Japan contributed to the fund to provide necessary assistance to the affected residents in Cinajur, Western Java.
