Project Update: 2022 Earthquake in Western Java, Indonesia

Upon the occurrence of the magnitude 5.6 earthquake in western Java, Indonesia on 21 November, Peace Boat Disaster Relief launched an emergency fund to support the humanitarian efforts by ASAR Humanity in Indonesia. According to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) Indonesia, 7,700 people were injured due to falling structures and debris while 73,000 people were displaced, and about 62,000 housing units were partially or entirely damaged. Residents in Cianjur, where the damage was most extensive, have experienced a shortage of shelters, food, safe drinking water, and access to medical services. Emergency Relief Fund: 2022 Earthquake in Western Java, Indonesia

On 21 November 2022, at around 1:20 pm local time, an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.6 on the Richter scale occurred near Cianjur, West Java, Indonesia. As of the morning on 22 November, 162 people have been confirmed dead and approximately 700 injured. In addition, more than 2,700 houses and buildings, including schools, have been damaged. The full extent of the damage in the area is still unclear and the number of people affected and the number of affected cases is thought to increase in the coming days. Certificate of appreciation from Saga Prefecture

We are very honored to be awarded a certificate of appreciation from the Governor of Saga Prefecture. Yasuhiro Ueshima, the secretary-general of the Peace Boat Disaster Relief (PBV) attended the ceremony held on February 4th, 2022, on behalf of the PBV team. Since August last year, PBV has carried out relief programs in Omachi-cho, Saga Prefecture to support the communities affected by the floods. In recognition of our activities, PBV was invited to the Governor’s Certificate of Appreciation presentation ceremony held at the Saga Prefectural Government. Support for Communities Affected by 2019 Typhoons Continues in Chiba

The longer it takes after the disaster, the more complex and challenging cases are found in terms of support. Communities in the southern part of Chiba Prefecture, Japan were hit hard by typhoons Faxai and Hagibis in 2019. The PBV team has been working closely with the local support groups and public sectors to continue the relief efforts. The house we visited today with the local Social Welfare Council members was assessed as half destroyed. Despite the emergency repair system being applied and a sum of JPY 595,000 being granted, the amount was not sufficient enough to cover all of the repair costs. One year since the oil spill disaster in Mauritius: Interview with EPCO – Part Two

M/V Wakashio, a bulk vessel owned and operated by a Japanese company went aground on the south-eastern coast of Mauritius in late July 2020. Ten days later, the ship started spilling oil causing environmental pollution to the sea and coastal areas. At the beginning of August, the Mauritian government declared a state of environmental emergency and called for support from the international community. Immediately after the news, Peace Boat Disaster Relief (PBV) started contacting the Mauritius-based NGOs responding to the emergency, and launched an emergency fund to support their activities. Update: Relief efforts in Kumamoto continue

Evacuation Center Support for Kuma-mura residents The torrential rains and severe floods hit Kumamoto Prefecture in July 2020. Peace Boat Disaster Relief (PBV) started logistics support to the relief organizations based in Kumamoto and neighboring prefectures immediately after the disaster. In response to the request from the prefectural government of Kumamoto and local government of Kuma-mura, YMCA Kumamoto and PBV provided operational support at the evacuation shelter for the residents affected by the disaster. 2020 Vietnam Emergency Fund Raising :Severe Flooding and Storms

Peace Boat Disaster Relief (PBV) has launched an emergency relief fund to support those affected by the floods and typhoons in central Vietnam. Since the beginning of October 2020, nine provinces in central Vietnam experienced torrential rains and seven tropical storms by the end of November. Landslides and floods caused enormous damage to the communities in the region, including loss of more then 240 lives.
