English-language “Household Disaster Preparedness Planning” Workshop

PBV held the English-language “Household Disaster Preparedness Planning Workshop” on 4th September 2016. 25 participants from 12 countries took part in the workshop, which was held at the “Shinjuku Bosai Festa”, a major disaster prevention festival in Tokyo. Over the course of 2 hours, the participants explored the following key workshop themes: “Understanding your household and surroundings”, “Visualizing a disaster”, and “Disaster preparedness and response”. Peace Boat Disaster Relief Volunteer Center attended the 66th UN DPI/NGO Conference in Gyeongju, Republic of Korea, which took place on 30 May – 1 June 2016. PBV at The World Humanitarian Summit, Istanbul

PBV participated in The World Humanitarian Summit which took place in Istanbul, Turkey on 23-24 May 2016. The Summit was attended by 9,000 participants from 180 member states, who came together to support a new shared Agenda for Humanity and take action to prevent and reduce the unprecedented level of humanitarian need and suffering in the world today. Kumamoto Earthquakes, One Week On

One week has passed since the first major earthquake struck Kumamoto on 14th April 2016. PBV’s team has spent extensive time on the ground, liaising with survivors and other stakeholders in emergency shelters and government offices, and working closely with relief organisations. The following information provides a snapshot of the situation on the ground as of 21st April: There are still 100,000+ evacuees in 658 shelters, and many evacuees are sleeping in cars as they are afraid to sleep indoors. Kumamoto Earthquake: Emergency Response

Between 14th and 16th April 2016, several strong earthquakes struck Kumamoto Prefecture, located on the island of Kyushu, Japan. The strong tremors have caused loss of life, resulted in thousands of injuries, and damaged critical infrastructure across the area. Over 400 aftershocks have been recorded since the initial 6.4-magnitude earthquake which struck Kumamoto on 14th April at 21:26 local time. As of 17th April, there were reportedly over 100,000 evacuees in Kumamoto City, and more than 700 emergency shelters have been activated in and around the area. Many people continue to stay in shelters or sleep in their cars due to the threat of ongoing tremors. PBV in South America: Disaster Risk Reduction Events In Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay

Peace Boat hosted a series of conferences and press events in South America as part of its commitment as a partner in the United Nation’s Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) Making Cities Resilient Campaign. In Montevideo, Buenos Aires and Valparaiso, Peace Boat’s ship was utilized as a space for local groups working on disaster risk reduction and response to come together to discuss and share ideas and resources on community preparedness and resilience. Youth Disaster Resilience Leadership Training

On 30th and 31st January 2016, PBV co-organised the TOMODACHI Disaster Resilience Leadership Training Program at Haneda Airport’s Galaxy Hall venue, in partnership with TOMODACHI Initiative and Japan IsraAid Support Program (JISP). Thirteen youngsters from different parts of the Kanto and Tohoku regions (all alumni of TOMODACHI Initiative’s programs) gathered for the 2-day intensive training program, which focused on disaster preparedness, disaster relief volunteerism, stress management, and providing psychological support to disaster survivors. Disaster Volunteer Coordination Training in Chile

Peace Boat Disaster Relief Volunteer Center (PBV) conducted training in Disaster Volunteer Coordination in Talcahuano, Chile, for 100 representatives from the police, fire department, civil defense, Red Cross and volunteers. The training was held at Inacap College in conjunction with Talcahuano City, the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction and Precorp. Talcahuano City was severely affected by the 2010 Earthquake and Tsunami and shares many of the same experiences as coastal towns across Japan.

Peace Boat x UNISDR Joint Programme – Resilient Youth in Asia

Young leaders from Indonesia, Thailand and Singapore gathered to share experiences and best practices related to disaster risk reduction onboard NGO Peace Boat’s passenger ship as it sailed from Japan to the Philippines and onwards to Singapore.
