“Making Cities Resilient” in Brazil

On Aug. 15th, Peace Boat arrived in Belem, Brazil. Disaster Risk Reduction is a topical and important issue in Brazil, given that the nation faces a wide range of natural hazards, including landslides, floods, and drought. In Belem, Peace Boat held a press conference and symposium with 19 government officials and DRR professionals onboard the ship, along with official representation from UNISDR. Disaster Risk Reduction and Resilience Building for Youth Leaders – Central America

In 2014, Peace Boat became an official campaign partner of the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction’s (UNISDR) “Making Cities Resilient” campaign. Since the campaign’s launch in 2010, over 2000 cities have pledged to take action on disaster resilience, climate change adaptation and enhancing disaster risk reduction measures in their areas. The “Ten Essentials for Making Cities Disaster Resilient” has been provided as a practical guidance towards building resilience in these cities. Japan CSO Coalition for 2015 3rd World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (JCC2015)

JCC2015 is a network of CSOs working towards the 3rd World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction, to be held in Sendai in 2015. The network works in close partnership with CSOs around the world to participate actively in the establishment of the Post-2015 Framework on Disaster Risk Reduction (HFA2), aims to build strong and resilient communities, and aims to share Japanese CSO’s experiences and lessons learnt with the international community.

[Disaster Risk Reduction] Q&A Manual – Assistance for Foreigners at Times of Disaster

The reason Peace Boat’s Disaster Volunteer Centre was able to receive international volunteers from 56 countries and regions around the world is because of the presence of bilingual volunteers to support communication. We have also been working with the local municipality and other gruops in Tokyo to provide information in languages other than English to support people in the case of a disaster, including making the Spanish translation of the Assistance Manual for Foreigners in Times of Disaster, which includes information in around 60 categories such as where to go to get food during a disaster or where to submit necessary applications.
