Project Report Published: Supporting the Rehabilitation in Ukraine

Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, Peace Boat Disaster Relief (PBV) has been actively engaged in supporting the people of Ukraine through various initiatives in Japan and neighboring countries. In April 2024, PBV collaborated with UNBROKEN National Rehabilitation Center in Lviv on a project aimed at advancing physical rehabilitation support for injured Ukrainians. In April 2025, Dr. Liubov Koloshynska from UNBROKEN visited Japan to take part in a training that included visits to rehabilitation facilities in Hiroshima and Fukuyama and knowledge exchange with Japanese medical professionals. This visit helped strengthen cross-border collaboration in the field of rehabilitation medicine and brought valuable insights back to Ukraine. As part of the […]

Tragedy, Recovery and the Work We Do

In early April 2025, I traveled with Dr. Liubov Koloshynska — a rehabilitation specialist from the Ukrainian UNBROKEN project — to Hiroshima for a two-day training. She was there to learn how to use RE-Gait, a Japanese robotic walking-assist device, which Peace Boat Disaster Relief (PBV) had donated to a rehabilitation center in Lviv. The schedule was packed with demonstrations, hands-on sessions, and hospital visits. Everything was focused on learning — how to fit the device, how to select patient modes, how to monitor and adjust the rehabilitation process. It was deeply practical, technical work. But during this short visit, we were also invited to take part in something far […]

RE-Gait Rehabilitation Begins in Lviv

This spring, a new chapter in Ukraine’s medical recovery began as the UNBROKEN Rehabilitation Center in Lviv launched its first RE-Gait-supported rehabilitation sessions. The robotic walking assist devices, developed in Japan and delivered through the collaboration between Peace Boat Disaster Relief (PBV) and UNBROKEN, are already making a real difference in the lives of war-affected patients. Over the past weeks, six patients began rehabilitation using RE-Gait. Four of them have already completed their course. Most are recovering from traumatic brain injuries, often accompanied by partial paralysis that makes walking difficult or impossible. One of the first patients, Vitalii, suffered a brain injury during the war that left him with left-sided […]

Online Exchange with Ukrainian Refugees in Romania

More than two years after the Russian full-scale military invasion of Ukraine, approximately 80,000 Ukrainians are still displaced in neighbouring Romania. On 14 March, in cooperation with Peace Boat Center Tokyo, we organised an online exchange event connecting young people in Tokyo with displaced Ukrainians living in Romania. The event was hosted in Romania by Notorious Learning Projects, our local partner who coordinates the support centre for displaced persons “Dobra Hata” in the city of Cluj-Napoca. There, the centre provides Romanian language classes and distributes daily necessities. Connecting online, the young people were able to learn about each other’s daily lives and culture, writing each other’s names in Japanese and […]

In cooperation with Hiroshima University in Japan, Tbilisi State Medical University and Ken Walker University in Georgia Medical Rehabilitation Clinic, and The First University Clinic in Georgia, PBV launches a medical relief project utilizing medical technology to help injured Ukrainian citizens including children. The ultimate goal of the project is to accelerate the rehabilitation process and help the patients reintegrate into society in a short time. The Russian invasion of Ukraine began about a year ago. PBV has carried out multiple projects to support civilians affected by the war in Ukraine in partnership with five NGOs since March 2022, and now implements a new project to expand the support. Japanese Civil Society Organizations join hands to support the populations affected by the Ukrainian crisis

Over 200 days have already passed since the beginning of the crisis in Ukraine. We have yet to see the end of the conflict and the beginning of peace on the ground. While many people fled from their homes to safer locations inside the country or left Ukraine entirely, the reality is that they are still in displacement for nearly seven months. Little is covered by Japanese media now, but the struggles of the refugees continue and humanitarian organizations tirelessly carry on with efforts to support them. Peace Boat Disaster Relief (PBV) is one such organization that offers assistance to those affected by the war in partnership with many civil society […]

All for Ukraine: Street Fundraising Campaign Launched!

Peace Boat Disaster Relief (PBV) set up an emergency relief fund last week to support those affected by the war in Ukraine. Together with NGO Peace Boat, we have started a fundraising campaign for a Romania-based NGO, Peace Action Training and Research Institute of Romania (PATRIR), which has been tirelessly providing support to refugees from Ukraine and coordinating humanitarian assistance in Romania since the beginning of the crisis. NGO Peace Boat has regional centers in five different cities across Japan, and each center is hosting street fundraising campaigns to support the PATRIR’s humanitarian programs. The first to kick-off the program was Peace Boat Center Fukuoka, located in the largest city […]

All for Ukraine Emergency Relief Fund Launched

On February 24, 2022, the Russian military invasion of Ukraine began, and military attacks by missiles and other weapons have been carried out in several cities in Ukraine. Many civilians, including children, have been killed. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), at least 930,000 citizens have fled to neighboring countries including Poland, Hungary, and Romania in search of safety, and more than 100,000 people have been internally displaced in Ukraine (as of March 2, 2022). The people who are fleeing the war and being deprived of their daily lives are in great need of support. Peace Boat Disaster Relief (PBV), together with the NGO Peace Boat, […]
