Earthquakes in Taiwan: PBV Emergency Relief Fund Launched

On April 3, 2024, a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck off the coast of Hualien City in Taiwan, shaking a wide area with a strong tremor of magnitude 6 or higher. According to Taiwanese authorities, more than nine people were killed and more than 1,000 injured (as of April 3, 2024). Rescue efforts are continuing as large-scale damage has occurred, including collapsed buildings, landslides, and falling rocks. There are fears that the damage may further expand in the future. International Solidarity in Times of Disaster: 16 Latin American and Caribbean Ambassadors in Japan Visit the Disaster-Affected Noto Peninsula

On March 19, 2024, 16 Ambassadors to Japan from countries of the Group of Latin America and the Caribbean (referred to as GRULAC) visited disaster-stricken areas of the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture, hosted by Peace Boat Disaster Relief (PBV).   This visit was realized through the strong determination of the Ambassadors to directly convey messages of solidarity along with relief supplies to the victims of the Noto earthquake, which occurred on January 1. Emergency Relief with World Central Kitchen in Lahaina, Maui Island

The PBV team in Maui joined World Central Kitchen and supported them in distributing meals to the residents affected by the fires in Lahaina. Last week, PBV staff dispatched to Maui joined the non-profit organization World Central Kitchen to help distribute meals to the residents affected by the fires in Lahaina. PBV has set up an emergency relief fund to support local communities in Maui and to date, funds from individual donors have supported over 700 meals, which have been distributed this past week. Call for Donations: Emergency Relief for Communities Affected by Wildfires in Maui County, Hawai’i.

On 8th August, 2023, the first fire was confirmed in Maui Island, Hawaii. The fires spread quickly and burnt the communities for days, resulting in damaging more than 2000 buildings in western area of the island. According to the media reports, most of the burnt structures were residential. Peace Boat Disaster Relief (PBV) launched an emergency relief fund to support the affected communities. Emergency Relief Fund for the Noto Peninsula Earthquake May 2023

On May 5, 2023, at around 14:42, there was an earthquake in Ishikawa Prefecture with a strong tremor of intensity 6 upper on the Japanese seismic scale. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the epicenter was located in the Noto region of Ishikawa Prefecture, with an estimated depth of 10 km and a magnitude of 6.3. Peace Boat Disaster Relief (PBV) expresses our deepest sympathies to all those affected by this earthquake. Turkiye-Syria Earthquakes: PBV delivered emergency supplies in Hatay, Turkiye

Responding to the earthquakes that occurred on 6th February in southwestern Turkiye, Peace Boat Disaster Relief (PBV) dispatched staff members to the affected areas for damage assessment and emergency relief activity in late February. During the visit, the team delivered emergency relief supplies to the affected communities in Hatay province, one of the worst affected areas. With the support of Turkiye-based members of ASAR Humanity, we distributed more than 400 hot meals, 50 hygiene kits, 30 solar lanterns, and 13 sleeping bags. Earthquakes in Turkiye and Syria 2023: PBV Emergency Relief Fund Launched

As widely reported in Japan and elsewhere, communities in Turkiye (formerly known as Turkey)  and Syria experienced very strong earthquakes on February 6. Extensive damage has been reported in both countries. More than a hundred aftershocks have been recorded as of February 7. Rescue efforts are still underway in snowy conditions. Peace Boat Disaster Relief (PBV) has been in touch with local NGOs and UN agencies to gather information on the damage and launched an emergency relief fund to support those in the affected communities. All for Ukraine Emergency Relief Fund Launched

On February 24, 2022, the Russian military invasion of Ukraine began, and military attacks by missiles and other weapons have been carried out in several cities in Ukraine. Many civilians, including children, have been killed. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), at least 930,000 citizens have fled to neighboring countries including Poland, Hungary, and Romania in search of safety, and more than 100,000 people have been internally displaced in Ukraine (as of March 2, 2022). Typhoon Rai (Odette): Emergency Relief Fund Launched

On 16-17 December 2021, a powerful typhoon Rai (local name: Odette) made landfall in the islands of central Philippines, causing extensive damage. As of 22 December, 2.4 million people and 604,322 households have been affected and 375 lives have been lost. The full extent of the damage, particularly on the smaller islands, is still being assessed and further reports are expected once communications are restored.
