Project Update: 2022 Earthquake in Western Java, Indonesia

Upon the occurrence of the magnitude 5.6 earthquake in western Java, Indonesia on 21 November, Peace Boat Disaster Relief launched an emergency fund to support the humanitarian efforts by ASAR Humanity in Indonesia.

According to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) Indonesia, 7,700 people were injured due to falling structures and debris while 73,000 people were displaced, and about 62,000 housing units were partially or entirely damaged. Residents in Cianjur, where the damage was most extensive, have experienced a shortage of shelters, food, safe drinking water, and access to medical services. In addition to the main earthquake, they have also experienced numerous aftershocks as well as landslides and floods caused by heavy rain.

Immediately after the disaster, ASAR Humanity sent teams to the affected communities and has been working tirelessly to meet the needs of the residents, ranging from hot meal distribution, food package and hygiene item provision, and medical services to shelter kit distribution.

Thanks to generous donations from the PBV supporters, we managed to transfer the initial fund to ASAR Humanity to support their relief efforts in Cianjur. The donations made it possible to provide a family shelter, a toilet serving 334 persons, food packages for 50 families, and medicine and medical services for 100 persons. We thank each and everyone who supported us to help those in extremely challenging situations.

The efforts by ASAR Humanity continue on the ground. In particular, there is an urgent need for repairing and reconstructing schools in the affected communities. According to the local government, 368 schools have been either damaged or destroyed by the earthquake. In order to support ASAR Humanity’s ongoing efforts to reconstruct the schools where children can study in a safe environment, PBV continues the fund-raising campaign. We seek your further support to help the children regain their places for learning in the near future.

Thank you very much for your cooperation.
