Commemorating a SFDRR: Building Resilience for 2030

Today marks the 10th anniversary of The Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction. According to the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), the framework outlines seven clear targets and four priorities for action to prevent new and reduce existing disaster risks: (i) Understanding disaster risk; (ii) Strengthening disaster risk governance to manage disaster risk; (iii) Investing in disaster reduction for resilience; and (iv) Enhancing disaster preparedness for effective response, and to “Build Back Better” in recovery, rehabilitation, and reconstruction. 14 years since the Great East Japan Earthquake: Passing the Torch from “Never Give Up, Ishinomaki” to “Building Hope in Noto”

It has been 14 years since the catastrophic earthquake and tsunami. We would like to express our deepest condolences to the families and friends of those who lost their lives in Great East Japan Earthquake, and we pray for the repose of their souls. Peace Boat Disaster Relief (PBV) has been working alongside the recovery and reconstruction efforts in Tohoku.On March 17th, 2011, shortly after the disaster, we arrived in Ishinomaki City, Miyagi Prefecture. Courtesy Visit to Tzu Chi Foundation Japan Branch

In mid-February, PBV visited the office of the Tzu Chi Foundation’s Japan branch. In the aftermath of the Noto Earthquake in January and the Hualien Earthquake in Taiwan in April, 2024, both organizations were actively involved in disaster relief in affected areas. The year 2024 provided an opportunity for exchanging information and supporting each other’s activities amidst the disaster sites in Japan and Taiwan. Located just one train stop apart, PBV’s Secretary General, Mr. Ueshima, and International Coordinator, Ms. Suzuki paid a courtesy visit to the Japan branch of the Tzu Chi Foundation, marking a significant step in strengthening humanitarian cooperation between the two organizations. PBV to Support Typhoon-Affected Communities in the Philippines

Peace Boat Disaster Relief (PBV) is supporting the recovery of communities affected by typhoons in the Philippines. Between October and November of last year, the Philippines was hit by six consecutive typhoons. These storms brought floods and landslides, resulting in the tragic loss of over 160 lives and impacting an estimated 9 million people. Super Typhoon Pepito  (known locally as Man-Yi), which made landfall in mid-November, was particularly devastating. It caused widespread damage in regions like Luzon and Catanduanes, destroying homes, downing trees and power lines, and making roads impassable. In Catanduanes, the damage was catastrophic. One Year Report on Ishikawa Noto Earthquake 2024

January 1, 2025 marked one year since a powerful 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan.  In the immediate aftermath, Peace Boat Disaster Relief (PBV) mobilized swiftly to provide crucial aid and support to those impacted. Our dedicated teams on the ground in Suzu and Wajima focused on delivering hot meals, distributing essential relief supplies, managing evacuation centers, and restoring access to community bath.
