Magnitude 7.1 Earthquake in Kumamoto: Emergency Relief Fund Launched

On July 28, 2026, a strong earthquake registering a maximum seismic intensity of 7 (preliminary magnitude 7.1) struck Kumamoto Prefecture. Strong shaking was felt across a wide area of Kyushu, and a tsunami advisory was temporarily issued for nearby coastal regions before being lifted at 18:10 JST. While the full extent of the impact is still being assessed, significant damage has already been reported, including collapsed buildings, fires, and landslides.
In 2016, a maximum intensity 7 foreshock struck Kumamoto, followed approximately 28 hours later by an equally powerful mainshock. Because major secondary tremors remain a serious risk, continued vigilance is essential. During the 2016 disaster, Peace Boat Disaster Relief (PBV) delivered emergency relief in hard-hit areas such as Mashiki Town and Nishihara Village, standing by local communities throughout the long-term recovery and reconstruction process.
Advance Team Dispatched and Emergency Relief Fund Launched
In response to this crisis, PBV immediately began gathering information in close coordination with government agencies and partner relief organizations. On July 28, we dispatched an advance team to the region to assess structural damage, evaluate local support infrastructure, and identify immediate community needs to ensure our aid is delivered effectively where it is needed most.
Drawing on the experience, expertise, and networks built over years of disaster response, PBV is preparing to deploy tailored assistance, including:
Relief Supplies and Food Assistance: Considering the deployment of “FOOBOUR,” a food truck that delivers relief supplies, provides on-site meal preparation, and serves hot meals.
Response to Damaged Homes: Emergency response and preservation of damaged homes; support for the operation of disaster volunteer centers.
Support for Evacuees: Support for evacuation shelter operations and improvements to living conditions.
Coordination and Collaboration: Coordination with relevant agencies and organizations; provision of disaster relief expertise.
The donations raised will be put to work immediately for urgent emergency relief and rebuilding efforts. Because circumstances on the ground evolve rapidly as assessments continue, our operational plans will adapt dynamically to local needs.
