Noto Devastated Again: Heavy Rains Hamper Earthquake Recovery

Just nine and a half months after the devastating Noto earthquake, the city of Suzu in Ishikawa Prefecture has been hit by another disaster: torrential rains. The downpours caused widespread flooding and landslides, compounding the challenges faced by the community still reeling from the January quake. Eight rivers burst their banks, inundating homes and businesses, including temporary housing erected for those displaced by the earthquake. Report: PBV’s Disaster Relief in Chile

On February 22, a massive forest fire broke out in central Chile, killing 137 people and forcing the evacuation of a total of 16,000 people. Immediately after this fire, PBV contacted the Nikkei Association in Chile and decided to support the Jardin Botanico Nacional (National Botanical Garden), which was severely damaged. The Jardin Botanico Nacional was the site of the A-bombed trees sent from Japan, which had been a symbol of peace and exchange. These symbolic cherry trees were also burnt to the ground by this fire. Learning Journey for the Children from Fukushima

PBV hosted a visit by children from Fukushima Prefecture where was affected by the earthquake and the nuclear power plant accident in 2011. The children visited houses that were destroyed by the earthquake, schools that served as evacuation centers and temporary housing, and toured bathing facilities operated by PBV. This visit was part of a cruise ship project conducted by the NGO Peace Boat, and the children visited the Noto Peninsula by ship during their summer vacation. For children living in Fukushima, this visit provided an opportunity to think about recovery from natural disasters and building sustainable communities.

Project Updates: Heavy Rain Disaster in Northern Japan Emergency Relief

This is Kita-aosawa, Sakata City in Yamagata Prefecture. It is one of the isolated villages after the heavy rain. As the photo shows, the first floor of a house was almost completely buried by the accumulation of earth and sand, and the original road was completely unrecognizable. When the heavy rain fell, residents kept a close watch on the nearby river flooding, but failed to notice the signs until large amounts of sediment began pouring in from the mountains behind them. Heavy Rain Disaster in Northern Japan Emergency Relief Fund

Record-breaking heavy rainfall since July 25, 2024 has caused landslides, floor flooding, and other damage in Yamagata and Akita prefectures in Japan. More than five levees along rivers flowing through Yamagata and Akita prefectures were breached, and approximately 1,000 houses were reportedly flooded in both prefectures. The number of damaged houses is likely to increase as the situation becomes clearer. The Peace Boat Disaster Relief(PBV) dispatched two staff members to the area on July 28 to investigate the damage situation and assistance needed, and will conduct relief activities according to local needs. PBV’s Disaster Relief in Chile Wild Fire

Donation to the Corporación Nikkei Región de Valparaíso (Valparaiso Nikkei Association) was successfully completed. A part of the donation will be used for the reconstruction of the National Botanical Garden in Chile that was destroyed by fire. PBV’s Relief Efforts in Noto Continue: Rebuilding Community Network

Six months have passed since the earthquake, but there are still areas in Suzu City where it is difficult to quickly restore the water supply, and people are forced to live under conditions where the tap water is not available. PBV has established a relief station in the Otani area, which is the furthest from the city center and where the only supermarket in the area was damaged, making shopping difficult. PBV’s Relief Efforts in Noto Continue: FooBour project

PBV is implementing “FooBour” project by using food truck in Suzu. The project name “FooBour” is a coined word combining “Food” and “Harbor”. Currently, FooBour is based in the tsunami-affected area in Suzu and provides food assistance to disaster victims. Local residents can access this truck at any time to obtain food, water, and other daily necessities. The truck is unmanned, and household items such as water, retort pouch food, and clothing are always stored, replenished or items replaced as needed. Wajima’s morning market, once a tourist attraction, was transformed by the fire and still looks painful even five months later.   As of May 28, 112 people were dead and 3 were missing in Wajima, and more than 14,000 houses were either completely or partially destroyed, left on the ground waiting to be demolished or cleared. Almost five months have passed since the devastating earthquake in the Noto Peninsula, Ishikawa prefecture. Peace Boat Disaster Relief (PBV) dispatched the members immediately after the disaster and has been working in two teams on the ground since then. In Suzu, a city located in the northernmost part of the peninsula, the PBV team has been working closely with the local authorities to carry out diverse support activities to support the affected residents.
