PBV’s Relief Efforts in Noto Continue: Public Bath Project

Wajima’s morning market, once a tourist attraction, was transformed by the fire and still looks painful even five months later.   As of May 28, 112 people were dead and 3 were missing in Wajima, and more than 14,000 houses were either completely or partially destroyed, left on the ground waiting to be demolished or cleared. Temporary housing has been built and evacuees have begun living in new places, but many of these residents do not know what to do with the houses and property left behind. PBV’s Relief Efforts in Noto Continue: Relief supply distribution center in Suzu

Almost five months have passed since the devastating earthquake in the Noto Peninsula, Ishikawa prefecture. Peace Boat Disaster Relief (PBV) dispatched the members immediately after the disaster and has been working in two teams on the ground since then. In Suzu, a city located in the northernmost part of the peninsula, the PBV team has been working closely with the local authorities to carry out diverse support activities to support the affected residents. 2023 Turkey–Syria Earthquakes: Psycho-social Support Program

On February 6th, 2023, Turkey and Syria were struck by a magnitude 7.8 earthquake. PBV is continuing its relief activities through the local partner, Nirengi Association. In the end of April, PBV has dispatched two staff members to check progress on the ground. In the suburbs of Antakya, Hatay Province in southern Turkey, where the earthquake caused particularly severe damage, kindergartens and nursery schools had not been adequately established even before the earthquake struck. International Solidarity in Times of Disaster: 16 Latin American and Caribbean Ambassadors in Japan Visit the Disaster-Affected Noto Peninsula

On March 19, 2024, 16 Ambassadors to Japan from countries of the Group of Latin America and the Caribbean (referred to as GRULAC) visited disaster-stricken areas of the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture, hosted by Peace Boat Disaster Relief (PBV).   This visit was realized through the strong determination of the Ambassadors to directly convey messages of solidarity along with relief supplies to the victims of the Noto earthquake, which occurred on January 1. Online Exchange with Ukrainian Refugees in Romania

More than two years after the Russian full-scale military invasion of Ukraine, approximately 80,000 Ukrainians are still displaced in neighbouring Romania. On 14 March, in cooperation with Peace Boat Center Tokyo, we organised an online exchange event connecting young people in Tokyo with displaced Ukrainians living in Romania. The event was hosted in Romania by Notorious Learning Projects, our local partner who coordinates the support centre for displaced persons “Dobra Hata” in the city of Cluj-Napoca. There, the centre provides Romanian language classes and distributes daily necessities. At around 4:10pm on January 1, 2024, an earthquake struck the Noto Peninsula area of Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan. We express our deepest sympathy to all affected by the earthquake. The damage is enormous, and the full scale of the disaster and extent of the damage remains is as yet still unknown. Strong aftershocks are still occurring frequently, and local residents are still in a very challenging situation. Call for Donations: Emergency Relief for Communities Affected by Wildfires in Maui County, Hawai’i.

On 8th August, 2023, the first fire was confirmed in Maui Island, Hawaii. The fires spread quickly and burnt the communities for days, resulting in damaging more than 2000 buildings in western area of the island. According to the media reports, most of the burnt structures were residential. Peace Boat Disaster Relief (PBV) launched an emergency relief fund to support the affected communities. The fund will be utilized to support the local partner organizations delivering emergency assistance to the communities, The PBV is also dispatching three members to the location on 20 August, to deliver emergency support and plan for longer relief projects. Vanuatu: Cyclone Pam Relief

PBV is currently conducting a needs assessment in Vanuatu after Tropical Cyclone Pam, working closely with local governments, national government agencies, INGOs and NGOs, and civil society on the ground. PBV is actively taking part in the UN cluster meetings, to ensure that our activities are part of the larger international community’s movements to provide assistance and to ensure that all information is shared as much as possible to reduce duplication of efforts.
