PBV staff visits UNBROKEN in Lviv and delivers Re-gait devices

Following Dr. Koloshynska’s visit to Japan, two Re-Gait packages were delivered to the National Rehabilitation Center in Lviv. PBV staff, Sofiia travelled with the doctor and the shipments and made a visit to the UNBROKEN hospitals and met with the team in early April.

Since the beginning of the full-scale attacks in Ukraine in February 2022, the city of Lviv has hosted 237,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) from other regions of Ukraine (as of October 2024). To date, the city continues to serve as an important humanitarian hub and the First Medical Union, a group of medical institutions in the city, collaborate under the UNBROKEN project to provide medical services not only for those injured during the war but also for those from other regions with chronic illnesses that require continuous care and treatment.

During the visit, Sofiia met with Yaroslav Zelizko, doctor of physical and rehabilitation medicine, deputy head of the Unbroken center and and physical therapists Pavlo Pyasetsky and Rostyslav Masteljak and visited the physical therapy facility and rehabilitation rooms in the center. Currently, the hospital offers medical service to about 1600 patients, (190 were in the rehabilitation center during the visit) The most common are amputations, multiple trauma, and traumatic brain injury.

While Lviv is considered to be relatively safe, sadly, no one can guarantee the safety in the hospitals, considering more than 22,000 healthcare facilities have been attacked over the last three years across the country. That is indeed why each UNBROKEN medical facility is equipped with a shelter to protect the patients and workers. The shelter in the hospital reminds us of the stark reality of the hardship the staff at the hospitals are facing when saving patients while the destruction continues.

With the cooperation of Dr. Koloshynska, two packages of Re-Gaits, the walking rehabilitation assistance robots, were introduced to the hospital with a view of utilizing the Japanese technology to help rehabilitation patients in Ukraine in the very new future. We look forward to learning how the devices contribute to the recovery of the patients in Lviv.

More updates from the ground will be shared on this page and PBV social media channels. Follow us on FaceBook, X, Instagram and LinkedIn and continue supporting our humanitarian efforts for Ukraine!
