Hands-On Disaster Preparedness Workshop with Hands On Tokyo (Ayumo Project)

On March 7, Peace Boat Disaster Relief (PBV) held a hands-on disaster preparedness workshop in Tokyo together with participants from Hands On Tokyo’s Ayumo Project, a program that supports and connects Ukrainian refugees in Japan.

Hands On Tokyo is a volunteer organization that connects individuals and communities with meaningful volunteer opportunities across Tokyo. Through the Ayumo Project, they support Ukrainian families in Japan by creating opportunities for community connection, learning, and mutual support.

The program began with a visit to the Ikebukuro Life Safety Learning Center (Ikebukuro Bosai-kan), where participants took part in several disaster simulation activities.

Participants first experienced an earthquake simulator, feeling shaking equivalent to Shindo 7, the highest level on the Japanese seismic intensity scale. Experiencing the strength of a major earthquake helped participants better understand the risks and the importance of disaster preparedness in Japan.

The group also practiced smoke evacuation training, learning how to move safely through smoke-filled spaces during a fire, and took part in firefighting training, where participants learned how fire extinguishers work and had the opportunity to try using one themselves.

PBV would like to express sincere thanks to the Ikebukuro Life Safety Learning Center for providing such practical and engaging learning opportunities.

After the visit, PBV’s Ikuno Suzuki led an interactive session on disaster preparedness for daily life in Japan, covering emergency supplies, evacuation planning, and practical safety tips for earthquakes and floods. Participants actively asked questions and shared their concerns throughout the discussion. For many Ukrainian participants, the workshop provided a valuable opportunity to better understand natural disasters that occur more frequently in Japan and how to prepare for them.

Additional sessions will take place on March 14 and March 21 in Tokyo.

The workshops are designed for international residents and conducted in English.
