Typhoon Dujuan Leaves Devastating Floods Across the Kanto Region
From September 19–22, Typhoon Dujuan approached eastern Japan, causing extensive damage across Kanagawa and Chiba Prefectures due to severe flooding and landslides. As of September 25, the disaster has tragically claimed 10 lives, and 4 people remain missing.
In Chiba Prefecture, which neighbors Tokyo, electricity and water services have yet to be restored in the affected communities. Nearly 1,000 homes have been impacted by the typhoon, with many inundated by floodwaters from the Takasaki River and Lake Inba. Beyond private residences, the floods also caused devastating damage to agriculture—especially rice crops that were only a few weeks away from harvest—and other local industries, resulting in enormous financial losses. Several rail services have been suspended due to landslides, including the JR Uchibo Line, which the rail company estimates will require more than three months to repair. For some local residents, this marks the third time they have been impacted by flooding this summer alone (see our previous post on the disaster impacts in August).
In response to the scale of the damage, Peace Boat Disaster Relief (PBV) dispatched staff on September 22 to conduct an initial needs assessment on the ground and began distributing hot meals in Sakura City the following day. Communities remain covered in mud, and residents are working tirelessly to clean their homes with help from family and friends. Residents warmly welcomed PBV’s hot meal support, particularly since blackouts and water outages have left them unable to cook at home.
With the help of local residents’ associations in the affected communities, the PBV team has provided around 200 meals daily over the past two days and will continue relief efforts in collaboration with residents, local authorities, and partner support groups.
