Tsunami warnings were issued for coastal areas of Hokkaido, Aomori, and Iwate, and small tsunamis of <strong>40\u201370 cm<\/strong> were observed. All tsunami advisories were lifted by <strong>6:20 a.m. on December 9<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Damage such as road collapse and power outages has been reported, and several people were injured by falls or falling objects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Risk of Strong Aftershocks and \u201cMegaquake\u201d Advisory<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Japan Meteorological Agency and the Cabinet Office warn that <strong>strong aftershocks\u2014or a potential larger main shock\u2014may occur over the next week<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Officials note that, based on global earthquake statistics, there is a possibility of a <strong>magnitude 8 or greater<\/strong> earthquake occurring along the Japan Trench or Chishima Trench as a follow-up event.<br>It remains <strong>unclear<\/strong> whether such an earthquake will happen, but residents are urged to stay alert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the <strong>first issuance<\/strong> of this type of alert since the category was introduced in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Safety Recommendations for Residents and Travelers<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>People in <strong>Hokkaido, Tohoku, and Pacific coastal areas from Hokkaido to Chiba<\/strong> are advised to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Stay away from coastal areas<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check evacuation routes and nearby shelters<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prepare emergency supplies (water, food, portable toilet, lights, chargers)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Secure furniture and household items to prevent injuries<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Follow updates from local governments, JMA, and official emergency channels<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Transportation disruptions continue in some areas.<br>The <strong>Tohoku Shinkansen<\/strong> has been temporarily suspended between Morioka and Shin-Aomori while safety inspections are conducted.
