This is Kita-aosawa, Sakata City in Yamagata Prefecture. It is one of the isolated villages after the heavy rain. As the photo shows, the first floor of a house was almost completely buried by the accumulation of earth and sand, and the original road was completely unrecognizable.<\/p>\n

When the heavy rain fell, residents kept a close watch on the nearby river flooding, but failed to notice the signs until large amounts of sediment began pouring in from the mountains behind them.<\/p>\n

Residents still wonder where on earth so much sediment was in a small mountain creek. Sediment suddenly came pouring in in large quantities.<\/p>\n

Dozens of households were affected by this torrential rain.<\/p>\n

Some residents did not go to evacuation centers for various reasons and continue to live on the second floor of their homes even under these conditions. Due to the water cutoff, they continue to live in inconvenient conditions, for example, using water from the creek to flush their toilets.<\/p>\n

Although supplies necessary for the emergency period have begun to be assembled, there are still not enough supplies for long-term evacuation for evacuees in shelters and at home.<\/p>\n
