{"id":5899,"date":"2016-11-19T14:42:52","date_gmt":"2016-11-19T05:42:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pbv.or.jp\/en\/?p=5899"},"modified":"2020-07-16T10:16:05","modified_gmt":"2020-07-16T01:16:05","slug":"haiti-emergency-response-phase-one-complete","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pbv.or.jp\/en\/news\/haiti-emergency-response-phase-one-complete\/","title":{"rendered":"Haiti Emergency Response: Phase One Complete"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5905 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/pbv.or.jp\/wp_en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Training-2.jpg\" alt=\"Training 2\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pbv.or.jp\/wp_en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Training-2.jpg 960w, https:\/\/pbv.or.jp\/wp_en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Training-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pbv.or.jp\/wp_en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Training-2-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>PBV began gathering information and contacting local partners immediately after Hurricane Matthew struck the Caribbean region in the first week of October 2016.<\/p>\n<p>During the week of 17th October, PBV established a formal partnership for Hurricane Matthew Emergency Response New York-based nonprofit, <a href=\"http:\/\/worldcares.org\/\">World Cares Center<\/a>, with whom PBV partnered to respond to Hurricane Sandy in the USA in 2012\/2013.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Emergency Response Operations<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A PBV staff member departed for the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince with Lisa Orloff, Founder and Executive Director of World Cares Center, arriving in the morning of 29<sup>th<\/sup> October.<\/p>\n<p>After liaising with local staff and preparing emergency supplies, PBV and World Cares Center departed for Jeremie, approximately 280km drive away.<\/p>\n<p>The town of Jeremie, with a population of 31,000, was one of the areas most affected by Hurricane Matthew.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Map of Port-au-Prince &amp; Jeremie<\/u><\/strong><br \/>\n<u><\/u><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5900\" style=\"width: 422px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/pbv.or.jp\/wp_en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Jeremie-Map-BBC.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5900\" class=\"wp-image-5900\" src=\"http:\/\/pbv.or.jp\/wp_en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Jeremie-Map-BBC.jpg\" alt=\"Jeremie Map (BBC)\" width=\"412\" height=\"232\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pbv.or.jp\/wp_en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Jeremie-Map-BBC.jpg 624w, https:\/\/pbv.or.jp\/wp_en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Jeremie-Map-BBC-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pbv.or.jp\/wp_en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Jeremie-Map-BBC-620x351.jpg 620w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 412px) 100vw, 412px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5900\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: BBC.co.uk &#8211; http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-latin-america-37570409<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Between 29<sup>th<\/sup> October and 1<sup>st<\/sup> November, PBV and World Cares Center delivered much-needed assistance to the communities in and around Jeremie (see the \u201cImpacts\u201d section below).<\/p>\n<p>World Cares Center (which has extensive experience in Haiti since the 2010 earthquake) had already identified a reliable coordinator in Jeremie who was able to gather beneficiaries, communicate with stakeholders, and provide local knowledge which proved to be a major asset.<\/p>\n<p>The joint team took all necessary precautions to ensure their safety as they moved around the affected areas, and ensured not to be a burden on affected communities by being self-sufficient and well prepared.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Impacts<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>PBV and World Cares Center successfully delivered the following services:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>TRAINING &amp; CAPACITY BUILDING<br \/>\n<\/em><\/strong><strong>Delivered a training session to 80 community leaders representing 12 communes<\/strong>\u00a0in the Jeremie area. The training focused on disaster management and community health and sanitation (including cholera prevention).<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>DISTRIBUTION OF PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMNENT (PPE)<br \/>\n<\/em>Delivered 80 Personal Protective Equipment kits<\/strong>\u00a0to community leaders who attended the training session above. The PPE kits included gloves, goggles, and respiratory masks, enabling them to help their communities in a safe and effective way.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>DISTRIBUTION OF HYGIENE KITS<br \/>\n<\/em><\/strong><strong>Delivered 400 hygiene kits<\/strong>\u00a0in the commune of Rouseaux.
