Peace Boat Disaster Relief Volunteer Center attended the 66th UN DPI\/NGO Conference<\/a> in Gyeongju, Republic of Korea, which took place on 30 May – 1 June 2016.<\/p>\n

Organized by the United Nations Department of Public Information, in partnership with the Republic of Korea, the NGO\/DPI Executive Committee, and the National Organizing Committee of Korea, the theme of the conference was “Education for Global Citizenship: Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals Together.”<\/p>\n

PBV presented several of its projects related to youth training in disaster risk reduction in a workshop co-organized with the Korea Green Foundation<\/a>, on the theme of “Empowering Youth to Find Solutions: Northeast Asian Models of Education for Peace, the Environment and the SDGs.”<\/p>\n

During the workshop, PBV\u00a0introduced\u00a0the “Disaster Risk Reduction and Resilience Building for Young Leaders” programme, implemented\u00a0in partnership with the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR<\/a>), as a successful case study of empowering youth. (Please see this<\/a>\u00a0UNISDR article for more information about the programme).<\/p>\n

Korea Green Foundation presented\u00a0the “Peace & Green Boat<\/a>” project. Since 2005, the organisation has been working with Peace Boat\u00a0in order to build new bridges between Japan and Korea, and a peaceful, sustainable future for East Asia, through the organization of short voyages exploring the region.<\/p>\n

Peace Boat also highlighted the Ecoship project<\/a> as a powerful tool to build capacity of youth and promote sustainability around the world.\u00a0The\u00a0Ecoship will be the world\u2019s greenest cruise ship; visiting 100 ports\u00a0worldwide each year, implementing sustainability education onboard and on land, hosting\u00a0green technology exhibitions, and providing platforms for collaborative research.<\/p>\n

PBV is\u00a0grateful to have had the chance to connect with NGOs, UN agencies, and other civil society actors working to implement\u00a0the Sustainable Development Goals at this conference in the Republic of Korea.<\/p>\n

Following on from this conference, PBV looks forward to continuing to work\u00a0with these\u00a0organisations in order take action on the Sustainable Development Goals.<\/p>\n
