Flooding and landslides which occurred on 10<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0September claimed lives and damaged thousands of homes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><u><span lang=\"EN-US\">The Flooding in Figures<\/span><\/u><\/b><\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc;\">\n<li><span lang=\"EN-US\">Flooding above floor-level (<\/span>\u5e8a\u4e0a\u6d78\u6c34<span lang=\"EN-US\">): 7,093 houses<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span lang=\"EN-US\">Flooding below floor-level (<\/span>\u5e8a\u4e0b\u6d78\u6c34<span lang=\"EN-US\">): 11,688 houses<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span lang=\"EN-US\">Evacuation Centres established: 56 centres<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span lang=\"EN-US\">Number of Evacuees: 2,744 people<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i><span lang=\"EN-US\">(Source: Cabinet Office, as of 16<sup>th<\/sup> September 2015)<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">On 11<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0September, PBV dispatched an advanced team to the affected areas to conduct a rapid needs assessment and coordinate with other\u00a0organisations on the ground, including local Social Welfare Councils, nonprofits and government agencies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Having conducted a thorough needs assessment, PBV has decided to carry out relief operations in Joso City, Ibaraki Prefecture<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5724\" src=\"http:\/\/pbv.or.jp\/wp_en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Ibaraki-6.jpg\" alt=\"Ibaraki 6\" width=\"960\" height=\"720\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pbv.or.jp\/wp_en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Ibaraki-6.jpg 960w, https:\/\/pbv.or.jp\/wp_en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Ibaraki-6-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Joso City was devastated by the flooding of the Kinugawa River, and many houses in the area were completely washed away. After the river burst its banks, the floodwater reached above several meters in height, changing the landscape dramatically as buildings, cars and critical infrastructure were destroyed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">In Joso City alone, 4,400 homes were flooded above floor-level (<\/span>\u5e8a\u4e0a\u6d78\u6c34<span lang=\"EN-US\">) and 6,600 homes\u00a0were flooded below floor-level (<\/span>\u5e8a\u4e0b\u6d78\u6c34<span lang=\"EN-US\">), according to Ibaraki Prefectural Government. Over 1,000 residents are taking refuge in 17 evacuation centres. Lifelines, such as electricity and water, are yet to be restored in all areas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\"><a href=\"http:\/\/joso.vc\/\">Joso Disaster Volunteer Centre<\/a> has been set up and volunteers are providing assistance to evacuees and helping to clean damaged houses.
