Ishinomaki: Three years on from the Great East Japan Earthquake<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

On March 11th<\/sup> 2011, Japan was devastated by the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami. The 9.0-magnitude quake triggered a series of powerful tsunamis that washed away coastal cities, destroyed critical infrastructure and claimed almost 20,000 lives.<\/p>\n

In Ishinomaki City alone, the death toll exceeded 3,500 and over 20,000 buildings were damaged or destroyed.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the immediate wake of the disaster, Peace Boat established an operations base in the area to manage and coordinate emergency relief efforts in partnership with local government and civil society organisations.<\/span><\/p>\n

To this day, PBV continues to coordinate volunteers in Ishinomaki to help survivors in long-term recovery; over 14,000 volunteers (including international volunteers from 56 countries) have willingly lent their time and energy to support the recovery and regeneration of the area.<\/span><\/p>\n

Three years on from the disaster<\/span>, PBV will conduct an English-language guided tour of Ishinomaki in order to explore the change that the city has undergone and examine the surface-level and deeper effects of the disaster. Those who have visited Ishinomaki as volunteers will have a chance to reconnect with the city and its citizens while first timers will gain a thorough understanding of the Great East Japan Earthquake and its impact on everyday lives.<\/span><\/p>\n
