The island has been repeatedly hit by heavy rain and strong winds since the disaster, slowing the restoration of basic infrastructure. Flooding and landslides have worsened road conditions, making it harder for aid to reach affected areas.

Recovery Work in Intense Heat

In late April, two PBV staff members travelled from Japan to assess local conditions, monitor the progress of support activities, and meet partner organisations and government officials.

The communities supported by PBV are located around two hours from the island’s main urban centre. Access is often disrupted whenever heavy rain falls, with landslides, muddy roads and vehicle accidents sometimes forcing road closures.

To make sure relief items arrive safely, aid teams have had to adapt their methods. Instead of relying on large trucks, they have used smaller vehicles that can better navigate damaged roads, and in some cases have transported supplies by fishing boat.

Now, around six months after the disaster, signs of recovery are beginning to emerge. In one temporary settlement of 38 households in northern Catanduanes, small shops have reopened, and some residents have started selling fish and prepared food, helping restore a sense of normal life.

At the same time, the dry season has finally begun, bringing daily temperatures of close to 30C. Under the intense heat, work is continuing to improve water and sanitation facilities, build temporary shelters for people whose homes were washed away, and clear and organise the areas around damaged houses.

Communication with Communities Remains Essential

PDRRN, PBV’s partner organisation in the Philippines, has a branch on Catanduanes Island and has been closely involved in local relief efforts.

The island had already suffered major damage from six typhoons between October and November 2024, when PBV and PDRRN supported affected fishing communities. One year on, Catanduanes has again been struck by a major storm, and many residents continue to face uncertainty each rainy season.

For aid efforts to be effective, communication is essential — not only with people living in the affected communities, but also with local government offices and other relevant authorities. Sharing information and exchanging views with those responsible on the ground helps ensure that support is appropriate and reaches those most in need.

A Call for Support

During the latest visit, PBV staff also shared with local residents that people had donated to support the response. The team said it was clear that those contributions had reached the communities directly, helping people rebuild their lives and bringing moments of relief and hope.

PBV says it will continue working with PDRRN, local authorities and residents to help communities on Catanduanes recover a safe and stable daily life.

Although they have faced one natural disaster after another, many residents remain determined to continue living in the places where they were born and raised. PBV and PDRRN say they will go on standing alongside them, providing support aimed at restoring safety, dignity and peace of mind. DONATE NOW to support PBV.

PBV has been supporting communities on Catanduanes Island in the central Philippines after Typhoon Fung-wong, made landfall last November and caused widespread damage.
